Solid Plastering

Solid plastering has many names throughout the plastering industry but it basically means that the whole wall is covered in solid plaster. There is no plasterboard underneath the skim coat.

Instead a rough coat of plaster which is known as browning in the trade is applied directly onto pre-bonded brick or block walls. A plaster skim coat is then applied directly onto this base to give the wall it's smooth finish. The finished look is the same but unlike plaster boarded walls there is solid plaster right back to the brick wall.

This was the only plastering technique that existed before the invention of plasterboards. Many of the older houses have this type of plaster and it is still a good effective form of plastering today.

Whilst the solid plastering technique is not used that much today it is particularly useful following damp proofing where a special damp proofing type of plaster is needed to be applied directly to the walls.

There are also some other occasions when it has to be used due to planning or building control reasons and of course personal preference by some people.

You can check out a cottage renovation project we did using the solid plastering technique in South Anston Nr Sheffield here.
